Tile adds personality and value to your home. This guide will give you the information—and confidence—you need to complete your own tile installation.

It is important to know a little about the surface you will be tiling. The answers to the following questions will be important when determining the installation materials you will buy and the methods you will use.

  1. What is the substrate (surface) you are tiling over?
  2. What type and size of tile did you choose?
  3. What is the square-footage of the area you are tiling?
    • Use a tape measure to find the square footage of the area to be tiled.
    • Subtract for areas not covered (windows, doorways, etc.). Multiply this figure by the number of tiles needed to cover 1 sq. foot. The result is the approximate number of tiles needed.

TIP: Purchase 10% more tile than estimated to allow for cuts and errors.
